Second Grade Mount Fuji-Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai


june mt fujiSkill Learned:  Working with watercolor and using oil pastel to create a resist.

Materials Needed:

  • White oil pastel
  • Blue, white, brown, red, orange and yellow water color
  • 18 x 24 taped water color paper
  • white batting or cotton balls for clouds
  • mount Fuji cut out
  • salt for background
  • tacky glue
  • large and thin brushes
  • black paint or sharpie for kanji word

Have students start by using the white oil pastel to created the cracks in the top of the mountain then set aside.  Next have them use the oil pastel to make a few clouds in their sky background.  Next have them paint their background using the blue and white water color then apply salt to get the cloudy look.  Set aside and then work on the mountain building the water color light to dark leaving parts for the brown on top and the bottom.  Next use tacky glue to add the clouds and glue the mountain down.  Then teach the kids how to draw the word beautiful in kanji on the left hand side in black paint with a thin brush.  (see attachment for the kanji word)
