Wanted to get this up before it got too close to Mother’s Day 😊 I did these last week with 7th grade and I love them.   I took the photos when they were wet so dried they are actually a matte finish which I like. I am going to seal them with a non-toxic matte varnish then wrap them for the students in butcher paper.  I below are the directions and material I used. Students loved coming up with some saying for mom.  Share pics if you use in your classes or at home and happy moms day ☺️

Skills learned:

  • Collage techniques

Materials:

  • Elmers glue
  • Paper plates for glue
  • Sponge brushes
  • 12 x 16 student canvas
  • Old newspaper
  • Watercolor (optional)
  • Various colored tissue paper (optional)
  • Sharpies for word writing
  • Small sponge pieces to do border or sponge hearts with water color

We started by tearing and ripping various pieces of old newspaper (only black parts not sections with color).  Then using sponge brush applying glue to entire canvas and placing pieces of newspaper in random places until entire canvas is covered. Be sure that if any is hanging over to either cut or tear off sides or use glue to make sure if stays down.  I had to go back and glue down some students because paper was lifting etc.  then be sure to add a good layer of glue on top of paper on canvas.  Now you can work on adding your words and design.  Some students wrote with a sharpie on separate piece of newspaper then glued it onto canvas. This way if you made a mistake you could correct it. But if you put it on and didn’t like it you could glue paper over it.  Also students added tissue paper hearts or sponger them with water color.  Here are some more for inspiration.
